It used to be a thriving mining town but when the mines shut down in the mid-1990's, the population dwindled down to what it is today.....35 people. Yes, 35 people that live here year round. Yellow Pine is unique in several ways. It hosts the largest harmonica festival in the world each August. About 3-5000 people, worldwide, show up for this backcountry event. In its 100+ year history no one has EVER been born in Yellow Pine. There are no other towns in the USA with its name either. This area has some of the best fly fishing, kayaking and snowmobiling in the entire country! My wife and I are retired photographers and we currently manage a small, local rustic resort here called Alpine Village which consists of a lodge and several 'A' frame cabins for rent. I also work, part-time, at the Silver Dollar Grill as a cook, bartender and waiter. Lots of tourists visit all year round. We often sit,uptown, playing the guitar, harmonica or banjo on the benches in front of the General Store. People join in and we often have great jam sessions. Living here is like going back in time. There is still a little red one-room schoolhouse, volunteer fire dept., hotel, cafe and of course a bar. We have lots of potlucks throughout the year celebrating birthdays and other events as well. Within the last 10 years we even got telephones and internet service! We often have elk, deer, bear and moose walk thru town or thru our front yard. The night sky is unbelievable, clear and full of stars. The biggest drawback about living here is driving 300 miles to go grocery shopping. You can bet we stock up. Even with that, it's well worth the sacrifice of driving versus the fresh air and mountain streams. 	Charlie Hagens Reunion: Charlie, his brother John, and I (Bethe Hagens, Class of 1964) were all together with our parents in New York in July of 1974 for John's wedding. Charlie came home early to surprise my parents by painting their house. There was a short in our electrical system, and he accidentally electrocuted himself. After a couple of years in Scientology, and then another few years with a Korean Christian movement known as The Church, Charlie had just gone back to school and back to music before he died.
